This disease can also affect pepper. Below are the symptoms, damage, and management strategies for this plant pathology.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"441\" data-end=\"488\"><strong>Symptoms and damage of the bacterial disease<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"490\" data-end=\"720\">The bacterium <em data-start=\"504\" data-end=\"529\">Xanthomonas vesicatoria<\/em> is the causal agent of bacterial spot of tomato, one of the three most dangerous bacterial diseases affecting this crop, together with <strong data-start=\"665\" data-end=\"695\">bacterial canker of tomato<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"700\" data-end=\"719\">bacterial speck<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"722\" data-end=\"936\">The disease initially appears as <strong data-start=\"755\" data-end=\"802\">small necrotic spots with irregular margins<\/strong>, mainly visible on the <strong data-start=\"826\" data-end=\"853\">underside of the leaves<\/strong>. In some cases, necrosis may expand to involve large portions of the leaf margins.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"938\" data-end=\"1351\">Leaf symptoms can be confused with those caused by <em data-start=\"989\" data-end=\"1011\">Pseudomonas syringae<\/em> pv. <em data-start=\"1016\" data-end=\"1024\">tomato<\/em>; however, bacterial spot is distinguished by its <strong data-start=\"1074\" data-end=\"1107\">characteristic fruit symptoms<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"1108\" data-end=\"1111\" \/>On immature fruits, the disease causes <strong data-start=\"1150\" data-end=\"1177\">sunken necrotic lesions<\/strong> surrounded by a <strong data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1213\">dark green halo<\/strong>. Yield losses can be severe, particularly in <strong data-start=\"1463\" data-end=\"1486\">processing tomatoes<\/strong>, while <strong data-start=\"1494\" data-end=\"1519\">fresh-market tomatoes<\/strong> affected by bacterial spot are unmarketable due to visible fruit damage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1594\" data-end=\"2106\">The development of the bacterium is favored by <strong data-start=\"1641\" data-end=\"1667\">high relative humidity<\/strong> and temperatures between <strong data-start=\"1693\" data-end=\"1709\">22 and 26 \u00b0C<\/strong>. Infection occurs through <strong data-start=\"1736\" data-end=\"1758\">stomata and wounds<\/strong>, making adverse weather events such as <strong data-start=\"1798\" data-end=\"1812\">hailstorms<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1817\" data-end=\"1833\">strong winds<\/strong> especially risky. In these cases, treatments with <strong data-start=\"1884\" data-end=\"1909\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coltivobio.com\/en\/copper-based-products-in-agriculture-fungicide\/\">copper-based<\/a> products<\/strong> are recommended within <strong data-start=\"1933\" data-end=\"1948\">24\u201348 hours<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"1949\" data-end=\"1952\" \/>Humans also play an important role in disease spread, both through agronomic practices that cause plant injuries and through the use of <strong data-start=\"2088\" data-end=\"2105\">infected seed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2113\" data-end=\"2166\"><strong>Control and management of bacterial spot of tomato<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2168\" data-end=\"2294\">There is no curative treatment for this disease; management is therefore mainly <strong data-start=\"2248\" data-end=\"2262\">preventive<\/strong>. Preventive strategies include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"2298\" data-end=\"2485\"><strong data-start=\"2298\" data-end=\"2329\">Crop rotations of 2\u20133 years<\/strong>, considering that the bacterium can also survive in the rhizosphere of crops such as <strong data-start=\"2415\" data-end=\"2424\">wheat<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2426\" data-end=\"2437\">soybean<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2439\" data-end=\"2455\">Solanum spp.<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2461\" data-end=\"2482\">Datura stramonium<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2488\" data-end=\"2568\">Careful monitoring of environmental conditions that favor disease development.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2571\" data-end=\"2643\">Use of <strong data-start=\"2578\" data-end=\"2603\">copper-based products<\/strong>, which can help limit bacterial spread.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2645\" data-end=\"2868\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coltivobio.com\/en\/copper-based-products-in-agriculture-fungicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"2645\" data-end=\"2661\">Copper salts<\/strong><\/a> should be applied at <strong data-start=\"2683\" data-end=\"2705\">7\u201310 day intervals<\/strong>, starting from <strong data-start=\"2721\" data-end=\"2748\">transplanting or sowing<\/strong> until the formation of the <strong data-start=\"2776\" data-end=\"2800\">first flower cluster<\/strong>, strictly following the <strong data-start=\"2825\" data-end=\"2867\">dosages indicated on the product label<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bacterial spot of tomato is a bacterial disease caused by Xanthomonas vesicatoria.
