In this technical factsheet, we will explain how to identify this disease and how to prevent it in a professional manner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"390\" data-end=\"425\"><strong>Symptoms and disease description<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"427\" data-end=\"726\">The disease is caused by the bacterium <em data-start=\"466\" data-end=\"488\">Pseudomonas syringae<\/em> pv. <em data-start=\"493\" data-end=\"501\">tomato<\/em>, which is responsible for the so-called <strong data-start=\"542\" data-end=\"561\">bacterial speck<\/strong> of tomato. It is one of the three most important bacterial diseases affecting tomato, together with <strong data-start=\"662\" data-end=\"692\">bacterial canker of tomato<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coltivobio.com\/en\/bacterial-spot-of-tomato-symptoms-and-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"697\" data-end=\"725\">bacterial spot of tomato<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"728\" data-end=\"1047\">This bacterial disease appears on tomato plants as <strong data-start=\"779\" data-end=\"826\">small, dark spots with well-defined margins<\/strong>, initially developing on the <strong data-start=\"856\" data-end=\"878\">lower leaf surface<\/strong>. These symptoms can easily be confused with those of <strong data-start=\"1365\" data-end=\"1393\">bacterial spot of tomato<\/strong> (<em data-start=\"1395\" data-end=\"1420\">Xanthomonas vesicatoria<\/em>), from which it differs mainly in the <strong data-start=\"1459\" data-end=\"1497\">type of damage caused to the fruit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7144\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7144\" style=\"width: 629px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7144 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coltivobio.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Bacterial-speck-of-tomato-on-stem-1-629x462.jpg\" alt=\"Stem damage caused by tomato bacterial disease\" width=\"629\" height=\"462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coltivobio.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Bacterial-speck-of-tomato-on-stem-1-629x462.jpg 629w, https:\/\/www.coltivobio.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Bacterial-speck-of-tomato-on-stem-1-613x450.jpg 613w, https:\/\/www.coltivobio.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Bacterial-speck-of-tomato-on-stem-1-768x564.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.coltivobio.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Bacterial-speck-of-tomato-on-stem-1-400x295.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.coltivobio.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Bacterial-speck-of-tomato-on-stem-1.jpg 927w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7144\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 3 &#8211; Stem damage caused by tomato bacterial disease<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-start=\"1563\" data-end=\"1944\">On fruits, bacterial speck causes <strong data-start=\"1597\" data-end=\"1631\">slightly raised, corky lesions<\/strong> approximately <strong data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1668\">1\u20132 mm in diameter<\/strong> (see Figure 4), whereas bacterial spot produces <strong data-start=\"1717\" data-end=\"1753\">slightly sunken circular lesions<\/strong> larger than <strong data-start=\"1766\" data-end=\"1774\">2 mm<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"1775\" data-end=\"1778\" \/>Bacterial speck causes severe economic damage to <strong data-start=\"1827\" data-end=\"1852\">fresh-market tomatoes<\/strong>, making them unmarketable, while losses are lower or negligible in <strong data-start=\"1920\" data-end=\"1943\">processing tomatoes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1946\" data-end=\"2397\">The bacterium survives on the surface of green plant tissues, where it can persist and multiply. Disease symptoms occur only under specific environmental conditions, namely <strong data-start=\"2119\" data-end=\"2156\">temperatures between 13 and 20 \u00b0C<\/strong> and the presence of <strong data-start=\"2177\" data-end=\"2208\">free water on leaf surfaces<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"2212\" data-end=\"2243\">relative humidity above 80%<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"2244\" data-end=\"2247\" \/>The bacterium enters the plant through <strong data-start=\"2286\" data-end=\"2313\">stomata or micro-wounds<\/strong>. For this reason, <strong data-start=\"2686\" data-end=\"2721\">long crop rotations (3\u20134 years)<\/strong> are recommended.<br data-start=\"2738\" data-end=\"2741\" \/><em data-start=\"2741\" data-end=\"2763\">Pseudomonas syringae<\/em> pv. <em data-start=\"2768\" data-end=\"2776\">tomato<\/em> has also been isolated from the rhizosphere of spontaneous plants such as <strong data-start=\"2851\" data-end=\"2869\">Stellaria spp.<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2874\" data-end=\"2889\">Lamium spp.<\/strong>, as well as cultivated crops like <strong data-start=\"2924\" data-end=\"2933\">wheat<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2938\" data-end=\"2970\">sugar beet (<em data-start=\"2952\" data-end=\"2967\">Beta vulgaris<\/em>)<\/strong>. Consequently, special attention should be paid to the previous presence of these species when establishing new tomato crops.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3098\" data-end=\"3724\">Management strategies for this bacterial disease are <strong data-start=\"3151\" data-end=\"3172\">mainly preventive<\/strong>. In addition to crop rotation, it is essential to use <strong data-start=\"3227\" data-end=\"3243\">healthy seed<\/strong> or seed treated <strong data-start=\"3260\" data-end=\"3287\">chemically or thermally<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"3288\" data-end=\"3291\" \/>Among seed disinfection techniques, it is worth mentioning the method involving <strong data-start=\"3371\" data-end=\"3415\">seed extraction after fruit fermentation<\/strong>. Seeds are collected from crushed tomato fruits and left to ferment with pulp and seeds together, allowing the activation of <strong data-start=\"3541\" data-end=\"3565\">lactic acid bacteria<\/strong>. After fermentation (approximately <strong data-start=\"3601\" data-end=\"3623\">3 days in the dark<\/strong>), the resulting <strong data-start=\"3640\" data-end=\"3656\">pH reduction<\/strong> leads to the elimination of <em data-start=\"3685\" data-end=\"3698\">Pseudomonas<\/em> bacteria inside the seed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3726\" data-end=\"4118\">Another control option is the use of <strong data-start=\"3763\" data-end=\"3788\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coltivobio.com\/en\/copper-based-products-in-agriculture-fungicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">copper-based<\/a> products<\/strong>. Copper treatments should be applied <strong data-start=\"3826\" data-end=\"3873\">immediately after transplanting (or sowing)<\/strong> and continued until the appearance of the <strong data-start=\"3916\" data-end=\"3940\">first flower cluster<\/strong>. Copper has a <strong data-start=\"3955\" data-end=\"3969\">preventive<\/strong>, not curative, effect.<br data-start=\"3992\" data-end=\"3995\" \/>Application rates, timing, and treatment intervals must strictly follow the <strong data-start=\"4071\" data-end=\"4117\">instructions provided on the product label<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bacterial speck is a bacterial disease affecting tomato.
