Mice are small rodents that can become a troublesome presence in the home and garden. In addition to damaging structures and contaminating food, mice can transmit diseases that are dangerous to humans and pets. In this technical and practical guide, we will explore effective methods to eliminate mice and keep them away safely and effectively, both inside and outside the home.
Generally, rodent infestations in homes are caused by the house mouse (Mus musculus), while rats are less common indoors and mainly prefer to roam in gardens and outdoor areas. There are two main species of rats: the common brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the black rat (Rattus rattus). Gardens and vegetable plots can also be infested by colonies of voles (Microtus savii), especially when they are located near waterways or large agricultural fields.

Identifying signs of infestation
Before taking any action, it is important to identify the signs of a mouse infestation. These include droppings, gnaw marks on wires and seals, nests made from paper or torn insulation material, and scratching noises coming from walls or ceilings.
In the garden, their presence can be identified by damage to vegetables. In general, mice and other rodents like to feed on fennel, artichokes and cardoons, which they gnaw at the base of the stem, as well as legume pods such as broad beans and peas.
Particular attention should be paid to droppings, as they are one of the most characteristic and useful signs for identification. Mouse droppings are black, elongated and dry in appearance. They are deposited along feeding routes and can therefore be found scattered throughout the area.
They may be confused with gecko droppings, but gecko droppings are generally larger and contain a whitish portion that is absent in rodent droppings (see photo below).
Removing food and water sources
One of the first actions to take to keep mice away is to eliminate food and water sources that could attract them. Store food in airtight containers, repair water leaks and regularly clean common areas to remove food residues.
These rodents are particularly skilled at finding almost any source of food and, in extreme cases, may even feed on unusual materials such as leather.
In a home, the main food sources include improperly stored food, pet food, seeds and bulbs intended for the garden. For those who have a vegetable garden, in addition to vegetables, major food sources include feed for backyard animals, such as grain used for chickens, rabbits and aviary birds, as well as food scraps placed in compost bins.
Sealing entry points
Mice can enter homes through very small openings, so it is important to seal all possible entry points. Check doors, windows, cracks in walls, gutters and openings around electrical cables or plumbing, using materials such as concrete, sheet metal or wire mesh (like this one).
Particular attention should be paid to chimneys, which can provide an entry route, especially during the summer. Mice can climb walls, particularly rough surfaces that provide them with an excellent grip.
Using traps
Mouse traps are among the most common and effective methods for eliminating rodents. There are several types of traps available, including snap traps, glue traps and electronic traps.
Traps should be placed along routes frequently used by mice or rats, using attractive food such as grains or peanut butter as bait.
Regarding glue traps, their use may be restricted or even illegal in some countries or regions. Regulations vary depending on local animal welfare legislation.
The main problem with these traps is the possibility of capturing animals other than mice, such as small birds and lizards. In addition, mice and other captured animals may experience a slow and painful death.
They should therefore only be used indoors and preferably inside protective containers with suitable openings to reduce the risk of capturing non-target animals. A better option is to purchase a ready-to-use enclosed model that reduces the risk of accidental captures (like this one).
Particular attention should be paid to children and cats because the glue is extremely adhesive. If contact occurs, removing it can be difficult.
An alternative is the classic snap trap, which is generally considered more humane because it is designed to kill the rodent immediately when it operates correctly (like these). These should also be placed indoors rather than outdoors to avoid accidentally capturing other small animals.
Electronic traps, on the other hand, kill rodents using an electric shock (like this one). They generally consist of small plastic boxes open at one end. The mouse, attracted by bait, enters the device and receives an electric shock.
Finally, there are also live-capture traps that do not kill the animal but confine it inside a dedicated structure (see photo below), allowing it to be released away from the house (see here).
Bucket traps work according to a similar principle. The rodent becomes trapped inside a bucket fitted with a special lid containing a rotating or tipping mechanism (see photo below). The rodent climbs towards the top of the bucket using an access ramp and, once it reaches the mechanism, falls into the bucket (you can find it here).

Using poison baits
Poison baits can be used cautiously as a method of controlling mice. They can be highly effective in controlling an infestation, and rodenticide technology has developed considerably in recent years.
The substances used in many products are designed to act after ingestion, helping to overcome rodents’ natural suspicion of unfamiliar food sources.
Commercial products may also contain bittering agents intended to discourage accidental ingestion by humans and some non-target animals.
Poison baits should always be placed inside appropriate bait stations (like these) and never left unattended or openly accessible, especially where children, dogs, cats or wildlife could reach them.
Regular inspection of bait stations also makes it possible to monitor the progress and effectiveness of the rodent-control programme.
These products are generally relatively inexpensive and effective (you can find them here).
N.B. In addition to using an appropriate bait station, always follow the product label and the manufacturer’s safety instructions when handling and applying rodenticides.
Using repellent devices
There are also electronic and ultrasonic devices designed to repel mice by emitting high-frequency sounds that are intended to disturb them. Although the effectiveness of these devices is debated, some homeowners use them as an additional deterrent.
Repellent sprays are another available option (here you can find a wide selection). These contain substances intended to discourage rodents from entering or remaining in treated areas.
They are easy to use but have the disadvantage of providing only temporary protection and therefore require repeated application, as all relevant areas of a house or courtyard need to be treated.
Their effectiveness outdoors may also be reduced by rain and weathering. For these reasons, repellents generally do not solve the underlying cause of an infestation and should be considered a supplementary or temporary solution.
Regular cleaning and maintenance
Finally, keeping the house and garden clean and tidy is essential for preventing mouse and rat infestations. Regularly remove waste, cut the grass and prune shrubs to eliminate potential hiding places for mice and rats.
Rodents essentially need two things to establish themselves in an area: food and shelter. If one of these is removed, the location becomes less attractive to them.
Access to food is therefore one of the most important factors influencing rodent infestations. Eliminating or reducing access to food sources is an extremely effective preventive measure.
For rural homes and farms, careful management of feed for backyard animals and proper storage of seeds and tubers are particularly important.
Specific control of voles
As mentioned previously, these small animals generally do not infest houses but instead affect vegetable gardens and agricultural areas. They are predominantly subterranean animals and feed on vegetation, sometimes causing significant damage to crops.
Vole populations can become very large and difficult to manage. Because they spend much of their time underground and create networks of tunnels, conventional traps and other control methods may be more difficult to use effectively than with house mice.
Physical exclusion can be particularly useful. Metal barriers can be buried approximately 30 cm below ground while extending another 30 cm above the surface. Voles are poor climbers and are generally unable to overcome an appropriately designed barrier.
Finally, small vole populations do not necessarily justify control measures. These rodents are part of the local fauna, and limited damage can sometimes be tolerated without intervention.
The classic method: the cat
Finally, let’s talk about one of the oldest methods available. Cats can be useful allies and may help discourage rodent infestations in two ways: through their presence, which rodents may perceive as a threat, and through active predation.
However, not all cats show the same hunting behaviour. Cats that have lived entirely indoors for generations may show less predatory behaviour than animals accustomed to spending time outdoors from a young age.
Cats with regular outdoor experience may therefore be more likely to hunt rodents.
Conclusion
Eliminating mice and keeping them away requires a multifaceted approach that includes removing food and water sources, sealing entry points, using appropriate traps or control methods, applying repellents where useful, and maintaining rigorous cleaning and maintenance.
By combining these measures with a preventive approach, it is possible to reduce the risk of unwanted mouse infestations and protect both the home and garden.
